Bolikhamxay Province, located in the central of Laos, is the 10th largest province in Lao PDR with an area of 15,977 square kilometers, rich of culture and nature resource with 3 national protected areas: PhouKhaoKhouay, NamKaDing and a part of Theun-Nakai. "Pakxan" the province capital, lies some 150km by South 13 Rd from Vientiane. Pakxanh, Thaphabath, Pakkading, Borikhan, Viengthong and Khamkheu are its. The province is also home to Nam Theun 2 Dam, the country's largest hydroelectric project.


Bolikhamsai Province has a very rugged terrain, with large bolders and streams. The altitude ranges from 140–1,588 metres (459–5,210 ft). The principal river is the Nam Kading, meaning "Water like a bell", a tributary of the Mekong River; its catchment covers about 92% of the provincial area. The other main rivers are the Nam Muan, Nam Sat, and the Nam Tek. Waterfalls of note include the Tad Leuk, Tad Xay and Tad Xang. The longest mountain range in the province is the Phou Louang range, running to the southwest, the Phou Ao range to the southeast; the Thalabat range to the northwest, and the Pa Guang range to the northeast. In Khamkheuth District, there is picturesque karst limestone scenery, which is allegedly the largest formation of its type in Southeast Asia. The many rock pinnacles have formed stone forest similar to limestone outcrops in southern China.

Climate

The tropical monsoon climate of Bolikhamxay has average temperatures ranging from 21 degrees C to 31 degrees C. The mountainous areas, Khamkeut District, generally stay much cooler with average temperatures of 11 degrees C during winter. Boikhamxay's rainy season is from May to September, while the dry season is from October to April.

Landmarks

Wat Phabath and Wat Phonsanh temples are important pilgrimage centres located between Vientiane and Pakxan. Wat Phabath is said to have a very large “footprint” of Lord Buddha and numerous murals. The location provides vistas of the Mekong River. Lak Sao, on the border, has the Nampao Checkpoint, crossing into Vietnam.


Wat Dan Soung: A series of colorful Buddhist buildings on the rocky outcrops surrounded by the beautiful nature. There are many large Buddha images, a holy pool, flower gardens, and rocks have interesting stories of the old legend 'Nang Sip Song' (The Twelve Ladies). 5Km on '4B Road' from 'Pakxan' Municipality.


Hospital Cave: Located in 'Kuanchan' village 20Km from 'Khamkeut' Municipality, used to be the hospital in Lao Revolution period 1970s

Ban Na (Na village) and Wild Elephant Observation Tower: Near 'Wat Phabath'. This village at the edge of the 'Phou Khao Khouay' National Protected Area offers guided trekking tours into the nearby bamboo belt and forest, it is known for its wild elephants which can be seen with a bit of luck from an observation tower close to a salt lick. The villagers are also accepting tourist for home stay.
