Buon Ma Thuot City is a Central City of Dak Lak Province in Central Highland. The name “Buon Ma Thuot” means “Village of Thuot’s father” in E De’s language. The City is located 1300km away from Hanoi or 350km away from Hochiminh City. Its area is 377km2 with 100km2 of residential area.
As part of the Central Highland in Vietnam, Buon Ma Thuot’s culture is connected with gong. Gong pays important part in the community’s activities. For the Ethnic group in Central Highland, the day of which they were born, beside the sound of their relative they heard is the sound of gong. In their culture, they use gong to deliver their souls and their dreams to the God. UNESCO has announced “Space of Gong Culture in the Central Highlands of Vietnam” is a Masterpiece and an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The Central Highland is not only famous about gong culture but it is also famous with traditional architecture of the Ethnic group. For example, the Communal House of the North Central Highland ethnic group and the longhouse of E De. Hand-sewing such as Tho Cam is very famous in Central Highland.

Step inside the central of Buon Ma Thuot City, we will see the Statue of Buon Ma Thuot’s Victory which is considered as the symbol of the city. Inside the city, you will also have a chance to see the Ko-nia Trees (science name is Irvingia malayana). What makes this tree so famous is the belief of Ethnic people. They say that the tree is where the God and the soul of the dead live, therefore, people in Buon Ma Thuot prefer to leave the tree alone.

Speaking of Buon Ma Thuot, we are certainly will mention about the Coffee here. In Dak Lak Province, there are 175.000ha of coffee plantations. Dak Lak is also a place with highest coffee beans to be produced in the world. Everywhere in Dak Lak, you will see the Coffee Plantations but the Cofee Beans in Buon Ma Thuot has the highest quality and unique flavor. And for that reason, Buon Ma Thuot has been known to the World and so the city has another name “The Capital of Coffee”. For the people that live in Buon Ma Thuot, drinking coffee has become their daily part of life. Drinking coffee is important as eating rice and drinking water here. In Buon Ma Thuot, the name “Chon Coffee” or “Squirrel Coffee” in English name is the famous type of coffee here. This coffee has distinctive smell and flavor which coffee lover once taste it will never forget as well as high possibility to be addicted to it.
As a “Capital of Coffee”, Buon Ma Thuot has been organizing Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Festival since 2005 with the aim to bring its Coffee to known by the rest of the World. This is one of the biggest Festival in Buon Ma Thuot. There are lots of activities to exchange knowledge about recipe of good coffee or how to produce one. Moreover, sport activities are also included.

Come to Buon Ma Thuot, we should not ignore some destinations which are worth wide for tourists. Because Buon Ma Thuot is the first place the King people come to settle in Dak Lak, most of tourism destinations here are history related such as:

Once we are in Buon Ma Thuot City, we should not miss a chance to see the Village of the E De right in the heart of the city called Ako Dhong or Co Thon. This Village is located at the end of Tran Nhat Duat Street. Co Thon Village is a big village with a long history and it has so many valuable cultures’ heritage. Its cultural value has been show clearly by its architectural structure of houses with roofs look like wave of the sea when you look afar. Co Thon Village is considered as historical area of Buon Ma Thuot.
