Vinh Long is a province with an area of 1.475 km2. It is located in the Mekong Delta sectors of Southern Vietnam. Vinh Long is on the Co Chien River, which branches out from the Mekong River at the narrows of My Thuan River about 10 kilometers upstream, only to meet it later downstream. Its capital is Vinh Long.
Across the Co Chien River from Vinh Long are the An Binh and Binh Hoa Phuoc Islands, some 15 kilometers across, with the Mekong River on the other side. A number of canals run through Vinh Long, with tall vehicular bridges crossing them. Transport by boat is possible, although parts of the town, particularly An Binh, become unreachable at low tide.
Lying between the Hau and Tien rivers in the center of the Mekong Delta, Vinh Long is a province well known for fishing. Prawns and the Basa and Tra catfish are among the many types of fish that exist in abundance in the waters of Vinh Long.
Moreover, with its rich and fertile soils, Vinh Long has become an ideal location for growing many exotic and delicious fruits, including the strange-looking mangosteen, the spikey rambutan and the pungently fragrant durian. Vinh Long’s areas are surrounded with extensive network of waterways which makes most of daily transactions happen on the Mekong River by boat. Fruits and many other items can be purchased for mere pennies from the huge water-based squadron of floating merchants.
Travelling by water is a common practice here for the daily needs such as grocery shopping as well as getting to restaurant and tourist attractions which are located on small islets and can only be accessible by boat.
